Footy Finals Fever at Recover Sports Medicine – 5th September 2008

The Coburg Tigers run out for the 2007 VFL Grand Final.
Once again Melbourne is gripped by September fever with the focus firmly on footy finals. This year Recover Sports Medicine is very much a part of the action. Physio Sam Rosengarten has been working hard with the Western Bulldogs all year as they enter the business end of the AFL season. Likewise remedial massage therapist Kathryn Williams is hard at work with the Bulldogs, and has also recently kicked off the A-Leauge soccer season with Melbourne Victory. Dietitian Alan McCubbin has also been hard at work with the Coburg Tigers in the VFL, as they seek to revenge last year's grand final loss. Unfortunately the news isn't so good for physio Ben Erlich and VAFA team Old Brighton Grammarians, who narrowly missed out on a finals berth in A Grade after a stellar season last year. Good luck to all our staff and their clubs as the race to the flag reaches its climax.

Recover supports Tour De Cure ‘08 – 4th March 2008

The second Tour De Cure will take place on March 31st - April 8th, 2008, when 30 cyclists will hit the road from Melbourne to Sydney, proudly riding for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Camp Quality.

Returning for this year’s Tour, Recover Sports Medicine has been instrumental in ensuring the needs of these riders are met. Our dietitian Alan McCubbin has been hard at work over the last few weeks to ensure that these athletes have the fuel they require to ride over 1200km in just 9 days. He has been liaising with the Tour’s catering partner, Canadian Kitchens, to ensure the riders get the best possible nutrition from their meals, and to make sure their hydration needs are met. This year Alan will form a member of the tour’s support crew as he travels with the team on their journey from Federation Square in Melbourne to Bondi Junction is Sydney.

Last year Tour De Cure raised over $350,000 for cancer research. This year they are on track to smash that, and are aiming at $550,000. To help them achieve this goal, pledge a donation to the Tour by visiting their website: www.tourdecure.com.au

Recover Dietitian Joins VFL Club – 5th February 2008

Recover Sports Medicine is excited to announce that our Accredited Practicing Dietitian Alan McCubbin has commenced working with the Coburg Tigers Football Club in the VFL. Coburg is affiliated with the Richmond Tigers AFL club. Alan has been down at Punt Road since December, working with newly appointed coach Jade Rawlings and the fitness staff to maximise the team’s performance.

As well as assessing skinfolds and body composition, Alan is working with the young team and fitness staff to maximise muscle gains throughout the pre-season. He also ensures players are well hydrated before, during and after games. He will also liaise closely with Richmond’s dietitian, as many over their players who don’t make senior selection will lineup for Coburg throughout the season.

The Tiger’s season will step up a gear in the coming weeks when practice matches begin taking place. As well as games against other VFL sides, they will take on AFL clubs that have been knocked out of the NAB Cup competition. Coburg hope to go one better this season – in 2007 the reserves won the grand final but the seniors were runners up to Geelong.

Recover Sports Medicine is proud to be associated with the Coburg Tigers, and we will continue to update you on their progress throughout the season.

Recover Riders Win Mountain Bike Enduro – 3rd December 2007

Congratulations to Mark Osborne and Chris Gray, who last weekend won the pairs competition of the Kona 24 Hour Mountain Bike Event in Forrest, Western Victoria. The Kona is Victoria’s largest endurance mountain bike race, where competitors alternate in teams to ride as many laps as possible within 24 hours. Competitors enter as solo riders or in teams of 2, 4 or 6. With the help of Recover Sports Medicine physiotherapist Sam Rosengarten and dietitian Alan McCubbin, the boys completed 20 laps of the 20 kilometer course within 24 hours, 3 more than second place.
This mammoth effort was a product of hard training by the riders, as well as a slick support crew. At each changeover Sam and Alan would weigh the riders to monitor fluid losses, review their heart rate over the course to monitor for fatigue and dehydration, then prepare them for the next lap. On the treatment table Sam had his hands busy, stretching and massaging the two riders almost constantly over 24 hours. And Alan was kept busy, monitoring food and fluid requirements and making sure the boys had the nutrition they needed to maintain a cracking pace.
The secret to the success of the team came in the overnight phase of the race, where the benefit of Recover’s support became obvious on the riders physical conditioning in the cold temperatures. From 9pm to 5am the team turned a 30 minute lead into well over 2 hours, defying sleepiness to ride continuously through the night. Come the morning Mark and Chris continued the pace, churning out consistent lap times over the last 6 hours the claim a win of almost 4 hours.
Being able to ride a mountain bike around twisty, technical trails, day and night, for 24 hours between 2 riders is an enormous achievement in itself. To complete the race with an average speed of almost 15 kilometers an hour, and win by almost 4 hours is an amazing result. Congratulations boys, and a big thank you to the rest of the support team – Marli, Kim and Em, who cleaned and serviced the bikes, helped make up the food and Gatorade, recharged headlight batteries, and kept the team motivated through the scorching heat of the day and the freezing night.
